Large Surfaces, Big Ideas: Flip-Top Tables for Flexible Learning Spaces

Flexibility in Learning

In contemporary learning environments, furniture plays a strategic role in fostering collaboration, comfort, and adaptability. In this project, developed in partnership with an industrial collaborator, our technical and production contribution focused on the design and engineering of a system of large flip-top tables on wheels, created for a university context. The shared goal was to provide a solid, safe, and easily reconfigurable product capable of meeting the functional and logistical needs of constantly evolving educational spaces.

Designed for Collaboration

The new learning models prioritize group work and interaction. For this reason, the project required extra-large work surfaces, significantly wider than standard solutions, capable of accommodating multiple users and materials simultaneously. The result is a surface that promotes interaction, discussion, and exchange, adapting to dynamic and multidisciplinary educational contexts.

Safety Integrated into Design

Given the size of the work surfaces, safety was a central aspect of the technical development. Each table is equipped with two independent locking pins — one dedicated to the open position and one to the closed position — to ensure stability and safety during every phase of use. This mechanism has been designed and tested to offer maximum reliability over time, even in high-use environments.

Mobility and Space Optimization

The directional wheels allow for quick and effortless movement of the tables, enabling the reconfiguration of the room layout according to activities: lectures, workshops, labs, or group sessions. Thanks to the flip-top mechanism, the tables can be stored compactly, optimizing the available space and simplifying logistical management.

Robustness and Long-Term Durability

The project has been developed with particular attention to structural strength and material quality. The steel frames ensure robustness and stability, while the choice of wear-resistant surfaces guarantees long-lasting durability. Every production detail has been refined to offer efficient, safe, and sustainable furnishings.

Technical Collaboration in Service of the Project

This project is the result of the synergy between design and manufacturing expertise, where our technical contribution has transformed an idea into a tangible and high-performing product. Through this collaboration, we have developed large-format tables that combine design, engineering, and functionality, redefining how learning spaces can be experienced and organized.
